Sunday saw the Tolly Cobbold team take on Ipswich Golf Club (Purdis Heath) in the First round of the Competition and It was always going to be a tough day against last years finalists.

The morning session started off well with things looking fairly level after 6 holes. Recent winter foursomes winners Jamie Gough and John Cater finished the morning 1 down in a match where no shots were given. Keith Wright and Nick Bickers were the next group in and they unfortunately finished 5 down after receiving 2 shots. Luke Marsden and Paul Finch were the 3rd pair in and they made the most of the 3 Shots they were given and finished an impressive 7 up. We were waiting on the final score from Martin Pestle and John Milne who also received 3 shots but unfortunately they suffered a small loss by 1 hole, which left us all square going into the afternoon.

Team captain Tony Cater left the order the same after lunch other than trying something a bit different in the group which suffered the biggest loss and replaced Nick Bickers with Tolly stalwart Glen Jermy. After 6 holes we were on top by 4 holes and things seemed to be going our way but gradually that lead started to erode in 3 of the 4 groups. Fortunately John and Jamie had the measure of their opponents second time around and were 7 up though 14 holes. Keith and Glen who had been up at one point were 3 down with 3 to play. Paul and Luke had also let a lead slip and were only 1 up with 3 to play. John Milne and Martin Pestle were 5 down with 3 to play so the result was in the balance once again. John and Jamie were the first pair in finishing 6 up giving us a good buffer. Glen and Keith were next in and did a great job of clawing it back to 1 down playing 18, which they won, giving us a very important 1/2 point. Luke and Paul lost the 17th leaving them A/S playing the last and their nerve held out well and they halved the 18th giving us another valuable 1/2 point. With Martin and John 5 down playing 17 our 6 hole lead was looking very fragile but they crucially won the 17th and made it mathematically impossible for the visitors to win and with them halving the last, although they lost by 4 holes, we won the day by a slim, but well fought 2 holes.

It was a fantastic team effort which showed when the going got tough, they had the minerals to hold up under pressure.

We go into round 2 at home against Diss on May 26th.

Thanks to all those who came and supported the team and especially club captain Howard Thornton (First Bar Supplies) who sponsored the clothing for the team.
