On the 28th April a Gorleston Hambro side comprising of James Chadd, Ben Leuty, Danny Western, Mark Seeley, Stephen Crosby, Daniel Crosby, Danny Perring, Brendan Gough and Lee Chapman took on a strong Haverhill side in testing conditions at home.

Having had several fiercely contested matches with Haverhill in the past the side were well aware they would be tested throughout the day. The opening pair of Danny Perring and Brendan Gough got off to an excellent start but their opponents played some very steady golf and edged out the Gorleston pair by two holes in the end. Mark Seeley, making his competitive debut for the side, built a comfortable lead early on and his partnership with Danny Western looked as strong as it had in the trial matches seeing them defeat their opponents by four holes come the end of their match. The back pairs of Ben Leuty & James Chadd in group three, and Lee Chapman and Stephen Crosby in group four saw them involved in very close games which both ended in all square results. The half time result of two up was a very positive one with conditions being so challenging and again showed how tough it would be to defeat a resilient Haverhill side.

Although both sides made slight changes to their order and Daniel Crosby came in for Lee Chapman who had picked up an injury, Danny Perring and Brendan Gough again to the lead role for the team and looked to set the tone for a positive afternoon. They were followed by Stephen and Daniel Crosby with Ben Leuty and James Chadd staying in third with Danny Western and Mark Seeley taking the anchor role for the team. A very positive front nine from the front three pairs made it look like it would be a reasonably comfortable afternoon but as expected Haverhill rallied late on and with three of the four Haverhill pairs getting a shot on 14th it was clear it was going to be a nervy end. Despite being one down through 14 Danny and Brendan produced an excellent final four holes to finish two up. Daniel and Stephen, who built a commanding early lead, showed no signs of relenting playing some excellent foursomes golf finishing their match three up. James and Ben battled their way to a one up victory putting their opponents under pressure throughout the afternoon and making it difficult for them to gain any momentum on the Gorleston pair. Danny and Mark, who had played so steadily all day stood on the 18th tee knowing the match had been won. An errant tee shot saw the pair do the sporting thing and concede the hole to Haverhill which meant their match finished two down.

Overall a very pleasing performance by a team who had to dig deep and perform when it mattered most. The result will see them go to Bungay and Waveney Golf Club on 26th May and look to secure a place in the quarter finals of the competition.
