15th June saw Gorleston take on Ipswich in the second round of the county Stenson championship. The interclub matchplay scratch competition see’s clubs to pick a squad of 10 players to play in four morning foursome matches and eight afternoon single matches.

On an uncharacteristic calm morning weather wise the breeze began to strengthen as most matches entered the turn. The opening pairing of Danny Perring & Chris Duffy halved their match with John Maddock & Stephen Crosby coming out 4&2 victors in theirs. The final two pairings Jack Butcher & Brendan Gough, and Matthew Alp & James Chadd were unfortunately defeated giving Ipswich a 2 ½ - 1 ½ lead with the afternoon singles matches to be played.

In a tense and fiercely competitive afternoon the Gorleston players performed exceptionally well in what were now far more challenging, and usual conditions. Danny Perring quickly disposed of his opponent 5&4, Stephen Crosby narrowly lost 1 down to county first team player Chris Fleming and John Maddock earned the team a halve in his match meaning the score stood at 4-3 to Ipswich with 5 matches remaining. Ben Leuty who was brought in at lunchtime took former county amateur champion Sam Byford down the last hole but was unfortunate to lose the match by 2 holes. Daniel Crosby, who also came into the side at lunch produced an excellent performance seeing him defeat Jack Philips, a highly regarding young golfer who has just completed a golf scholarship in USA 2 up. Jack Butcher was dominant in his match and defeated his opponent 5 & 3 meaning that in the remaining 2 matches both sides needed at least 1 point to secure a playoff or 1 ½ points to progress to round 3. Chris managed to close out his match 3&1 and so when Brendan holed a testing 8 footer on the last, and his Ipswich counterpart missed his 4 footer, it meant Gorleston would be progressing to the last 8 of the competition.

Gorleston will take on reigning champions Bury St Edmunds at Bury on 27th July looking to secure their place in the semi-finals where matches are played on neutral courses.
