During Lockdown former Club Captain, Glen Harman, began to make plans to hold an NHS Day to thank the staff of the James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) who had worked tirelessly nursing the local population during the COVID pandemic. The plans eventually came to fruition on 29th August when a huge field of competitors took part in a Texas Scramble Event. Local Sponsors and members were very generous in their support and the Charity Day raised an amazing total of £6,264. The cheque for which amount Maxine Taylor (pictured above) was delighted to accept on behalf of the JPUH.

On 21st August members celebrated the completion of their new 15a par 3 hole situated at the far end of the course facing towards the sea. This event coincided with the President's Challenge Florida Scramble. The competition included a Drive In Nearest the Pin Challenge which was won by our Professional Duncan Abbot which prompted comments including 'do you give lessons?'. The Green's Committee and Staff had worked extremely hard and huge thanks are due to them and also to Ovamill for their support. The aim of the day was to raise monies for the Captains' Joint Charity, the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The Event was generously sponsored and raised a total of £1,655.00.

Finally it is the Gorleston Golf Club Ladies Centenary in 2022/23 and many events are planned for the whole Club. On her Ladies President's Day, Rosemary Woodhouse, held a raffle the proceeds of which would go towards the celebrations and she was delighted to announce a total of £365 had been contributed on the day.

15A Incorporating The Presidents Challenge

Saturday the 21st August saw a fantastic day for ALL concerned at Gorleston Golf Club. The afternoon 9 Hole Florida Scramble event celebrated the official opening of the 15A short par 3 hole and combined the Presidents Challenge Event and the Captains joint Charity the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

To Open the Hole a group of players made up from the Greens Committee and Club Champions contested a Nearest the Pin challenge with varying degrees of success! In the end Duncan Abbott, Club Professional hit the nearest shot.

Fourteen groups played in the scramble and I am delighted to say the winning Team was that of Paul Dashwood , Steven Everard, Harry Page and Isabelle Everard with a net score of 25.

Delighted on two counts , one this team contained two juniors and also two members of the Everard family , Mark Everard being so central to the building of 15A and sponsoring the event.

Wally Perring won the Nearest the Pin event on the day.

The Presidents Challenge which was always to be held on this day , involved half the teams representing the Club President Penny Platten and half representing the Ladies President Rosemary Woodhouse. Amazingly the total of all teams nett score came to the same figure so the Presidents Challenge was shared.

Its was great to see the clubhouse full with players ,players guests and guests from Ovamill enjoying the BBQ and having a drink.

The Money raised for the East Anglian Air Ambulance during the event has come to over £1500 and a massive thank you must go to all those who helped make the event possible , Penny Platten, Rosemary Woodhouse , Vonnie Thornton ,John Hopwood , Sue Smith , Maggie Hart, Greens Staff and of course Mark Everard.

Latest Club News

As we know things are currently far from what we might have expected them to be in previous years and the Cub Captains' Joint Drive In has been no exception.

As members are aware this is a great Fun Event which is held annually on the Sunday immediately following the Club's AGM. This year COVID restrictions meant that the Captains could not encourage a crowd of members and their families to attend the event which is often followed by one of Tim's fabulous Sunday lunches.

The Club Captain, John Hopwood, and the Ladies Captain, Vonnie Thornton, have nominated the East Anglian Air Ambulance as their joint Charity for the year and were very keen to ensure that this fund raising opportunity did not go by unnoticed.

To this end and in very cold cross winds, bringing with it some light rain, the four Captains met, unbeknown to most Member and Committee, at 3.15 on Friday 9 April, 2021, and bravely proceeded to hit their drives.

First off was Ladies Captain, Vonnie, who had just played 18 holes with a new Member. Vonnies drive was a low one which headed left towards the gorse. Ceryse Fuller, Junior Captain, was the next to hit her drive which she pushed high over into the woods on the right hand side of the first fairway.

Following this it was the turn of the men with the Seniors' Captain, Martin Pestle, whose drive went just right of the fairway by the rose bush. Last, but by no means least, it was the turn of the Club Captain, who in his words 'pulled one out of the bag' straight down the middle of the fairway. Many thanks are due to the Captains who helped to raise £187 for the Joint Charity, to Duncan Abbot and John Maddock for their adjudications and to Maggie Hart for taking photographs of the event. The Captains wish to pass on their sincere thanks to all Members and Sponsors for their generosity.

The winners are as follows:

Ladies Captain: 95 yards - Keith Wright (107 yards)
Juniors Captain: 132 yards - Pat Sterry (123 yards)
Seniors Captain: 179 yards - Jonathan Bloomfield (176 yards)
Captain: 183 yards - Barrie Peaks spot on (183 yards) unlucky Gerry Eagling with 184 yards.
